Spectroscopy of Single N-V Centers in Diamond

چکیده
Over the past few years, the detection of single N-V centers in diamond has attracted much interest, since it is expected to lead to innovative applications in various domains of quantum information. The N-V center in diamond is a defect consisting of a substitutional nitrogen atom adjacent to a carbon-atom vacancy. The optical transition between the A ground state and the E excited state has a very high quantum efficiency allowing single defect spectroscopy. Because of the paramagnetic nature of the ground electronic state, single N-V defects are believed to be promising candidates for solid state quantum computation. To date, however, the photophysics of the defect is not entirely understood. The existence of a singlet metastable state A was challenged in a series of papers reporting holeburning, optically detected magnetic resonance and single molecule experiments. We present here an overview of recent low and room temperature data, indicating the important role of a metastable state of the defect in single center experiments.

Origin of persistent hole burning of N - V centers in diamond
New satellite features and antiholes in the persistent hole-burning spectrum of N-V centers in diamond, as well as their dependences on applied electric fields and frequency within the inhomogeneous absorption line, are reported. These results, together with reassignments of spin states of this center, permit an understanding of the origin of the satellite holes as well as of possible mechanism...
متن کاملExcited-state spectroscopy using single spin manipulation in diamond.
We use single-spin resonant spectroscopy to study the spin structure in the orbital excited state of a diamond nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) center at room temperature. The data show that the excited-state spin levels have a zero-field splitting that is approximately half of the value of the ground state levels, a g factor similar to the ground state value, and a hyperfine splitting approximately 20x ...
متن کاملExcited-state spectroscopy of single NV defect in diamond using optically detected magnetic resonance
Using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance techniques, we directly probe electron-spin resonance transitions in the excited-state of single Nitrogen-Vacancy color centers in diamond. Unambiguous assignment of excited state fine structure is made, based on changes of NV defect photoluminescence lifetime. This study provides significant insight into the structure of the emitting E excited...
متن کاملTwo-photon excited fluorescence of nitrogen-vacancy centers in proton-irradiated type Ib diamond.
Two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy [(N-V)-] centers in type Ib diamond single crystals have been studied with a picosecond (7.5 ps) mode-locked Nd:YVO(4) laser operating at 1064 nm. The (N-V)- centers were produced by radiation damage of diamond using a 3 MeV proton beam, followed by thermal annealing at 800 degrees C. Prior to the irradiation treatment,...
متن کاملSpin dynamics and electronic states of N-V centers in diamond by EPR and four-wave-mixing spectroscopy.
We applied a new phase-modulation technique for nonlinear laser spectroscopy with sub-Hz relative resolving power to measure fundamental relaxation processes of the N-V center in diamond. Complementary EPR experiments versus temperature establish the ground-state spin character in the absence of optical illumination and show that spin-lattice decay occurs via two-phonon processes involving the ...
